top 5 books for mental health

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews

I had a hard time deciding which book to talk about first. I was torn between this novel and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, but ultimately I decided on Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. It's a fantastic story about an unlikely friendship between two outcasts—a cancer patient named Rachel and her eccentric neighbor Greg (AKA "Earl"). The humor is dry, but some of it may be lost on those who're unfamiliar with 80s films or television shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The princess bride

  • The Princess Bride by William Goldman

  • Published in 1973

  • Adapted into a movie in 1987 (the film is also known as The Princess Bride)

This novel is one of the top 100 best novels of all time, and it’s easy to see why. The story revolves around a princess and a farm boy who fall in love but get separated when she is kidnapped by an evil prince. The farm boy then sets out on a quest to rescue his love from certain death at the hands of her captor. Along the way, he encounters quirky characters including a giant, two Spanish swashbucklers, and some very unusual fairy tale creatures like giant eels that swallow men whole! This book has everything: romance, action, adventure—even comedy!

American Psycho

American Psycho is a satire about an investment banker who has a dark side. The book was written in the 1980s, during the Reagan era and at the height of the yuppie class—a time when capitalism was running rampant and consumerism had reached its peak. The novel is a commentary on masculinity and violence, which were both glorified by society at that time.

  • The protagonist Patrick Bateman is an upstanding citizen in his community who appears to be well-educated and has no criminal history whatsoever. He lives with his wealthy parents; they're known as "Mr. & Mrs." because they have no names (just like most characters in this novel).

  • On paper, he looks like your average white guy with money problems who wants everyone around him to think he's smart—and maybe even better than them! But under this mask lies a psychopathic killer who derives pleasure from murdering women without remorse or regret

Fight Club

  • Fight Club is a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, published in 1996. It tells the story of an insomniac who starts a "fight club" with soap salesman and leads it to become an underground movement.

  • Some people say that the plot twists are predictable, but I think they are well done. In fact, I feel they should have been more predictable. The first time I read Fight Club, my reaction at each plot twist was "Of course! How could this not be what happened?"

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the final book in a series about a boy who finds out he is a wizard and has to defeat a dark wizard.

These books are great.

While you’re at it, why not read some more?

Here are five books that are great. You can read them on your phone or your computer or a tablet or a kindle—the choice is yours.
